Job Summary

The Respiratory Therapist performs, facilitates and evaluates clinical services provided by the therapy department that includes various respiratory care treatment modalities, PFTs, pulmonary rehabilitation and EEG in addition to coordinating sleep studies with contracted sleep center.   

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provides respiratory care orientation and competency testing of multi-disciplinary staff members.
  • Determines respiratory therapy treatment plans in consultation with practitioners and by prescription.
  • Administers bronchopulmonary drainage treatments, assists with breathing exercises and monitors patient responses to therapy.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of the respiratory treatment plan by observing, noting and evaluating patient's progress, recommending adjustments and modifications to the plan.
  • Completes discharge planning by consulting with practitioners, nurses, social worker and other health care workers, acting as a resource during multidisciplinary conferences.
  • Assures continuation of therapeutic plan following discharge through home exercise program development and instruction to patients, families and caregivers with recommended follow-up care.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Must be an excellent communicator who has graduated from an accredited school of respiratory care with an Associate of Applied Science degree.
  • Holds current license for state of Iowa as Respiratory Care Practitioner
  • ACLS and PALS certification required within one year of employment
